PEACE NO NUKES ONLINE EXHIBITION

Curated by Shahina Jaffer

Hosted by The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, an international, feminist NGO.

The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted by an overwhelming majority in 2017. It reached the required 50 states parties in October 2020, and on the 22 January 2021, the treaty will enter into force, cementing a categorical ban on nuclear weapons, 75 years after their first use. Now we can call nuclear weapons what they are: prohibited weapons of mass destruction, just like chemical and biological weapons. We invited artists from across the globe to create artwork to celebrate this historic milestone for this landmark treaty.

In December WILPF UK member, Shahina Jaffer offered to open a virtual exhibition for artists and the Executive agreed. On January 8th we shared the poster advertising this with our networks and the first entry was sent in on January 11th. There have been some brilliant entries from all over the world sent by the deadline of today and the attached e-book link. We are so grateful for the sharing of this creativity and to Shahina for the idea.

Please enjoy whilst celebrating TPNW and remember we still need to campaign to get the UK to sign the Treaty.

The rising number of armed conflicts around the world The absence of women during conflict resolution and peace negotiations The struggle for survival of the highest numbers of refugees ever, worldwide (most of whom are women and children) Multi-national organisations exerting too much influence over our everyday lives, for example by exploiting workers, increasing the wealth gap between the Global North and South, and degrading the environment Increasing environmental effects of armed conflicts Billions spent on building and maintaining weapon systems and facilities when millions of people in the UK and worldwide lack healthcare, education, social services, food, water and housing.
